Interviews & Waits

Hello lovely people! How has your week been? What has been the best thing that has happened this week? Let me know!

As I am writing this I am one day post interview. I’ve been to many an interview, I certainly know my way around them. My interview was for a Nursery/Pre-School, I first heard about them through the job fair I attended a couple months back.

When I was chatting to the representatives of said company, I was really interested and was a bit excited at the prospect of the job. Yesterday, my tune changed rather dramatically.

I was having weird dreams around 4am about being late to the interview, I can confirm I wasn’t late – I was nine minutes early. I was a bit stressed because I just did not feel prepared at all. Once I was buzzed in, I was standing in the entry for around five minutes.

When the person who was interviewing me arrived, they did not greet me like most interviewers usually do – they did not shake my hand, just told me to follow them up… red flag number one.

If you are attending an interview, you really should be greeted as it is the first impression you are making for a potential new hire. Don’t forget, you are also interviewing them.

The individual then guided me to a room, the staff room to be exact. I was passed an application form to fill out, second red flag – I really should’ve been sent the form beforehand. Every interview I have attended I would of already been sent or filled out a form pre-interview.

Once the form was given to me the individual left me alone in the staff room. I was amongst the staffs belongings and a mobile phone was just left out on the table in front of me. Red flag three. A complete stranger – who has not filled out a form within your belongings? Not a smart move…

If anything had been miss placed or taken by someone else, there is a high chance that I would be suspect number one. So I made a note of that situation, if I was to work there and my things where left unattended, it would either remain untouched or stolen, but other people aren’t always like me (you know, someone who doesn’t steal things).

You would think I would only be left alone for fifteen minutes max, you would be thinking wrong. 45 minutes passed and I still had not had my interview. Around five of the staff popped in to collect things, only two of whom ackowledged my existence politely (the other three gave me rather rude looks). Not very welcoming if you ask me…

When it hit that 45 minute mark I was so ready to walk out, there was an individual in there with me and they started asking if I was there for the interview, how I was feeling and what time my interview was at.

To answer the individuals question I said 10:30am (I had been there since 10:21am) the individuals face changed in horror, clearly not impressed that I have been waiting for close to an hour for my interview, for their company… Red flag four.

By 11:30pm, the next candidate arrived. I still hadn’t had my interview. I was understandably annoyed, finally the interviewer came to get me. The interview itself was alright at most, I wasn’t blown away and I wasn’t in the mindset of refusing to work there because of being badly treated. The interview lasted 20 minutes total.

I recieved a half hearted thankyou and no handshake. I guess the whole experience was just very unprofessional. I left feeling annoyed, frustrated and tired. I was so over the whole job and couldn’t wait to leave. They said I’d be contacted at some point today or tomorrow. I haven’t heard anything today.

A part of me would be very annoyed if I didn’t get the job after being treated like that, but another part of me isn’t really that bothered if I didn’t? I guess I would prefer to be offered the job to turn it down and give them feedback on the experience, but then I also feel like it would be stupid to say no…

I’ve been job hunting for months and to throw an opportunity away to work? Not the smartest idea.

What do you think of this whole situation? Am I justified in thinking like this or is it unreasonable?
